I just finished the memoir of Stephen King. I had never read anything he wrote before because I am not a real suspense lover. But after reading a review about this 15 year old book I ordered it immediately and it turns out to be one of the best, useful and truest books I’ve read in years. We ended up reading it at the same time and fighting in bed “no, you had it last night!” and referring to it in many of our work-talks.
In the first half he writes his memoir which is very good, but the second part, where he takes you through the art of writing, is brilliant. For everyone who has any interest in writing or storytelling that is. Cut out the bullshit, work hard, take long breaks, read a lot and be honest. Also some good advice for everyone with no interest in storytelling…
“You try to tell yourself that you’ve been lucky, and usually that works because it it true. Sometimes it doesn’t work, that’s all. Then you cry.”
“Writing isn’t about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It’s about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.”
